The Different Names of God

Daniel was reading the Bible with his son James, who paused him after the story of Hagar in Genesis 16:13.
Hagar is the first person in Scripture to give God a special name: “You are the God who sees me.”
James asked about the names of God. Daniel explained, “Your name is James, but I call you Jimmy-Jam, your mom calls you Jamie, and your friends call you Jimmy. You’re still the same person.”
Daniel added, “Different names indicate a special relationship and mark of friendship.”
Like James, you may wonder about God’s many names and their meanings. Let’s explore a few of them…

Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide
In Genesis 22, Abraham's faith is tested when God asks him to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac. Despite how difficult it is, Abraham is willing and sets out on the journey. Near the mountain, Isaac innocently asks, “Where is the lamb?” revealing his familiarity with sacrifices.
Abraham reassures him, “God will provide for the offering.” Just as Abraham is about to sacrifice Isaac, an angel intervenes, stopping him and affirming his fear of God. Abraham then finds a ram to sacrifice instead.
Abraham names God “Jehovah Jireh” or “Yahweh-Yireh,” meaning God will provide. This name reflects God's character and serves as a reminder to Christians that God will meet their needs.
In times of struggle, when burdens feel overwhelming, remember that God provides, just as He did for Abraham. Your role is to walk in obedience and trust your Heavenly Father to supply your needs, embodying true faith.
Jehovah Nissi: The Lord Is My Banner
Israel was camped in Rephidim, having been delivered from Egypt and provided for by God (Exodus 17:5-6). Here, they questioned, “Is the LORD here with us or not?”
The Amalekites threatened to attack, so Moses instructed Joshua to lead the soldiers into battle while he prayed on the mountain.
God granted victory, and Moses named the altar Yahweh-Nissi (“the LORD is my banner”) (Exodus 17:15, NLT).
This name was significant as banners in battle were rallying points. Moses declared God as Israel’s banner, their source of strength and courage.
In personal battles, focus on God as your banner, your strength, and courage for victory.

Jehovah Shalom: The Lord Is Peace
Gideon is quietly threshing wheat in a winepress, trying not to attract attention. For seven years, his nation has suffered from enemy raids, leaving many starving. Despite fear of being caught and killed, he persists. A stranger greets him, calling him a "Mighty Warrior," which Gideon dismisses, feeling he's just trying to survive for his family. He questions why these hardships occur, a question many can relate to.
God doesn't answer but gives Gideon a task, reminding him, "I am with you." Gideon builds an altar named Yahweh-Shalom, meaning "The Lord Is Peace," symbolizing peace amidst uncertainty. This story shows that peace comes from God's presence, not from resolved circumstances.
God offers this peace to everyone, assuring us we are not abandoned.
Jehovah Sabaoth: The Lord of Hosts
The name "Lord of Hosts," used throughout the Old Testament, translates to "Lord of Heaven's Armies." David invoked this name when confronting Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:45, demonstrating trust in God rather than relying on physical strength or weapons.
David's faith was evident as he proclaimed victory in God's name before the battle began, recognizing that the battle belonged to the Lord. This act of calling God the Lord of Hosts signifies ultimate trust, acknowledging His sovereignty over all armies, spiritual and earthly. The Blue Letter Bible describes this name as denoting God's universal sovereignty.
Whatever battles we face, we can trust that God maintains control and fights for us, as seen when He delivered the Israelites at the Red Sea. God asks for our faith and reliance, promising to fight and win the battles on our behalf.

The Intimacy of a Name
What's great about a name is how it can show a special connection. Just like you might call your spouse "sweetie" or your beloved kid "baby girl," having a special name for God shows how important your relationship with Him is.
These names can really lift you up when things get tough. Maybe right now, God is showing you that He's your Provider. Or maybe He's proving to be your Strength. Or perhaps He's stepping up as your Defender.
God is always exactly what you need. You can rely on Him to show you who He is.
A Prayer for You…
God, please reveal Yourself to me. Show me a new name of Yours. Help me to cling to that name in the middle of this season of my life. Thank You for always being exactly what I need. I love you, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
